Doromb.com - the Jew's harp site

Doromb.com is a website focused on Jew's harp (Doromb means Jew's harp in Hungarian). The main language of the site is Hungarian, but on this page you can find detailed info in English. (We are working on the translation of the whole site, but nobody knows when it is done.)

If you like Google translated version, here you go! (The currencies work a bit weird, though: All the "big numbers" are in Hungarian Forint, no matter if Google puts a Pound or a Dollar sign before it.)

The site is edited by Áron Szilágyi, Jew's harp player. See "Impresssum" and "About" below.

The Dorombshop

This is an online store where you can buy professional Jew's harps handmade by the master, Zoltán Szilágyi. You won't understand the text, but the videos  will give you a clear picture. With the currency changer (on the left side), you can check out the the prices in GBP, USD or EUR. Shipping is around 10-15 Euros for 2-5 instruments, but it depends on the destination and the weight.

If you would like to order, just go through the order process, it's quite straight forward.

Jew's Harp Tutorials

It is very easy to make a sound with the Jew's harp, it gives you very quick satisfaction, you will enjoy playing it straight away. This is a short written introduction, but check out the video tutorial section of the site.

Hold the instrument at it's bow shape in your left hand with the twanger sticking outwards. Open your teeth ca. 10mm wide and press the frames against your teeth so that the sprng can vibrate between your teeth and the arms of the Jew's harp. Pluck it straight forward. You can intonate with the movement of your tounge.

This was very-very basically described, indeed. Check out the videos!

About the editor

This site is edited by Áron Szilágyi with the aim of acquainting the Jew's harp to as many people as possible. This is a virtual meeting point for those who are interested in this instrument, who want to learn more about it or want to spread knowledge as well.

Some words about him:
Áron Szilágyi was born in 1977 as the first son of Zoltán Szilágyi, the only one Jew's harp maker in Hungary. He could play the instrument, when he was three but strated to take it seriously at the age of 16.
Since 1997 Áron has been an active member of the international JH movement and has been a regular guest of the international festivals. At these festivals he was deeply inspired by the different styles and playing techniques of the other virtuoso players. Especially learnt a lot from the Swiss Anton Bruhin. His creativity and extravaganza with this instrument has given Áron a great push in developing his own style. He also got a deep inspiration by the spiritual JH music of the Yakut Spiridon Shishigin.
He is a Board Member of the International Jew's Harp Society, member of the program committee of the International Jew's Harp Festivals, organizes the annual Hungarian Jew's Harp Festival (which is an international event). Besides the Jew's harp events, he is the president of the Eurokult Association that organizes world music and youth festivals. He is the director of the Leskowsky Collection of Musical Instruments which is the largest independent public musical instrument museum of Eastern-Europe.
Plays in and manages two bands: Airtist (www.airtist-music.com) and Navrang (www.navrang.hu).

Has played and taught the Jew's harp in many countries. Aron was nominated to the Prima Primissima prize, that is awarded to those who maintain and rethink cultural heritage or achieved great results in sports etc.

Married, father of two beautiful kids.
